Against all Odds: Independent Artists & Young Creatives
Starting a business or following one’s dreams most especially in the music industry requires a lot of mental preparedness and tough skin. In the early stages of my musical career, I battled depression and sometimes had to deal with self-belief issues. These feelings stemmed out of me comparing my artist journey with that of my peers. It took a lot of self-reflection to admit that there was a problem. Subsequently, with the help of the right acquaintances, I was able to eliminate such thoughts and I have kept the ball rolling ever since against all odds. In this article, I would like to share a few key points which keep me grounded and help me to see the bigger picture even in trying moments.
- Dealing with the Nay-Sayers
It took me long enough to realize that not everyone will sympathize with your cause, celebrate you or support your dreams. Embracing this reality can be the most liberating action for your creative career. As cliche, as it might sound your music, isn't for everyone so find your niche audience and serve them. While a lot of us are quick to tag non-supporters as haters its also an important point to note that some people are rather neutral and don't necessarily know how they can show their support for your creative ideas. With that being said don't be too shy to ask for support from family and friends when it's needed. Let the people in your circle know how important your dreams are. With consistency and quality content delivery, they'll come around and if they don't they'll still be people who would happily support you no matter what.
God gave you the privilege of this thing called life, so regardless of what this society tells you that you can’t do and what you don’t have to, understand you lack nothing.

2. Appreciate your supporters
The above-mentioned point cannot be over-emphasized. It is important to acknowledge your supporters as they consistently show you they care for your craft. This energy has to be reciprocated as it is a catalyst for building an army of fans who would go on to spread the word about you. There can never be enough supporters. Seize the opportunity to reply a message now that you still can and let your fans know how valuable they are. Furthermore, it is really easy to fall into the spiral of not being satisfied in a quest for more. When those feelings arise, it is necessary to reflect on how far you have come and given your team and yourself the appreciation fuel needed to proceed.
Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough

3. Know Thyself
During the course of my musical career, I have come across several characters. It is not unusual in this business to come across people who will try to devalue your worth or make you contemplate whether you are deserving of certain opportunities to them its all a game. To this, I say Know thyself, know your worth and don't be afraid to show it. Psychologically you have to immerse yourself into the type of positive thinking and self-love which projects on the outside. Through this, like-minded people are naturally drawn towards you. Believe that you are deserving of the beautiful things of life, say it on a daily basis and watch it manifest into fruition.
4. Never stop Dreaming
Life is full of endless opportunities for those who dream. There will be ups & downs, different obstacles will arise during the path to success. Savor the great moments and try not to swim too deep in the low ones. Enjoy the process and open your mind to see the bigger picture. My latest single ‘Tha Juice’ with Hannes (HKMK) touched on the subject of breaking boundaries and winning against all odds.
